IKEA DIY Kitchens – only for experienced DIYers!

Have gone for IKEA cabinets and stone benchtops.Don’t dream for a minute that an IKEA kitchen will be simple, easy, or quick.Overall, I am happy with the quality of the cabinets. There are a few things to be aware of though.1. Not all my cabinets were the specified size. For example, one of my 200mm wide cabinets was 203mm and needed to be trimmed. Doesn’t sound like much, but it is a big problem. 2. No matter how much you try, you will get a cumulative error of 1mm per cabinet when you assemble them side-by-side. So an island of 5x 600mm cabinets will end up being 3005mm long. 3. Don’t waste time with IKEA’s island bench anchoring system and the flimsy plastic cabinet feet. I built a solid plinth for the cabinets using glue laminated structural timber, shimmed perfectly level and dynabolted to the floor. This ensured the cabinets had a perfectly flat, level surface and required virtually no adjustment to level. 4. The island bench kits to join back-to-back cabinets together are only required at the top rear of each cabinet, not the bottom. This means you can buy half the quantity, since four brackets are provided with each kit.If you can afford it, go for the more expensive drawers. The cheaper ones are rubbish.Don’t underestimate the time needed. For me to demolish the old kitchen island and install the new one, consisting of 12 cabinets, took four days. This doesn’t include the benchtop or end panels and doors. And that’s only half my kitchen. I am thinking that all-up, it will take me about 14 days of effort to install my kitchen. Most jobs can be done by one person, but a helper will be needed for some tasks. This is not a task you can do with just an allen key and a screwdriver. So far, the tools I have used included: Circular saw Drop saw Cordless drill 18V Multi tool Chisels Electric screwdriver Hammers Drill bits Masonry drill bit Countersinking drill bit Spade bit 90 degree drill attachment Spirit level Straight edge Square Utility knife Saw horses Clamps… …anyway, you get the picture.Perhaps if you have a tiny kitchen with only 5 or 6 cabinets you could get away with a lot less.Recommend getting the delivery service. These guys were awesome. Careful and thorough.Oh yeh, and IKEA’s inventory and ordering system is rubbish. I went on the weekend to get 4 things that I missed when ordering (like handles, can you believe it?). They were out of stock or couldn’t find 3 of the 4 items. Another good reason to get the delivery service. Leave that headache for the store to sort out.And when you go to order your kitchen, allow a good couple of hours in the store, and try to go on a weekday!
